Adega do Cartaxo experienced a dynamic year in 2024, highlighted by its 70th anniversary celebration, which underscored its ongoing commitment to people, production, and the environment. The new year began on a positive note as the winery’s sustainability plan earned certification from the National Certification Framework for Sustainability in the Wine Sector, established by the Institute of Vine and Wine (Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho - IVV) and supported by ViniPortugal. With this recognition, Adega do Cartaxo can now proudly display the Sustainable Winegrowing Portugal seal.
The winery’s sustainability efforts have been in motion for over 20 years, beginning with a significant investment in 2004 to build an industrial wastewater treatment plant (known as ETAR, in Portugal). Recent initiatives include installing LED lighting across the facility, introducing modern equipment with electronic speed control, monitoring water usage, using heat pumps and panels to heat water for bottling line sanitisation, and installing photovoltaic panels for self-generated energy.
As a cooperative with 168 grape-supplying members, Adega do Cartaxo faces unique challenges in implementing and certifying sustainable practices. However, 13% of the members account for 65% of production, allowing targeted awareness campaigns and meetings to promote a shared vision for the future and ensure business sustainability.
Pedro Gil, Director of Oenology and Production at Adega do Cartaxo, views sustainability as an ongoing journey. “The future of the wine sector hinges on sustainability – environmentally, socially, and economically. We aim to meet even higher standards and are planning further improvements over the next three years. Reducing the use of glass is a key area of focus, although some markets, like Asia and Brazil, still favour heavy bottles. Our role is to gradually raise awareness and drive change. Energy and water consumption, as well as wastewater treatment, are critical areas where we lead by example,” he explains, noting that adopting a sustainability mindset and policy has been vital for maintaining competitiveness and ethical practices.
At the socio-economic level, Adega do Cartaxo is committed to fair labour practices, with a policy of fair pay for both employees and members, ensuring timely and equitable payments for grapes. There is a focus on health, with health insurance provided to its approximately fifty employees. Adega do Cartaxo also collaborates with various organisations, technical schools, and universities to foster local development and provide training for its staff.
